Udawalawe National Park

Location: Southern Sri Lanka

Area: 308 sq km

Established: 1972

Udawalawe is famous for its large elephant population, with around 700 individuals roaming freely across its grasslands and scrub forests. The park was established to provide a sanctuary for wildlife displaced by the construction of the Udawalawe Reservoir. Its open terrain makes it one of the best places in Sri Lanka for elephant safaris.

Apart from elephants, visitors can spot water buffaloes, crocodiles, jackals, and a variety of bird species such as painted storks and serpent eagles. The Elephant Transit Home near the park rehabilitates orphaned elephants before releasing them back into the wild, offering an ethical way to observe these animals up close.

Jeep safaris at sunrise or sunset are highly recommended to experience the park’s serene beauty and witness its thriving wildlife.
